"The Eames chair is basically meme status," said Joel Vanderveen, a 35-year-old from Minnesota who created a subreddit about a decade ago dedicated to all things Eames. "Until the last 10 years, when people would say to me they had an Eames chair, I never knew which one they meant," Kirkham said. The Eames chair is one of those rare luxury goods that checks all those boxes for novices and experts alike, in his view. Not everyone with the Eames chair has a new one, an expensive one, or even a real one. The Eames chair seems eco-friendly, too — they're not going to be tossing it out in two years.

Less obviously visible but equally impressive are the historical treasures, some more than 12,000 years old, that can be found underground. Unlike the Basilica, this underground chamber was completely forgotten about until less than 15 years ago. Other than locals herding their livestock through the ruins of a garrison city dating to the 6th century, few people went there. Now, the site has given up numerous treasures including rock-cut tombs, an olive processing workshop and a series of underground cisterns. Yeraltı, literally meaning underground, was originally a dungeon in the basement of a fort built by the Byzantines in the 8th century CE.

Fink, the chief executive of BlackRock, used his annual investor letter to warn of a looming "retirement crisis" facing the US and raise his concerns about disillusioned young people. This triggered criticisms on both sides of the aisle and became a major headache for Fink and the firm. He has avoided using the term ESG and repeatedly emphasized that BlackRock works with energy firms. Fink, who is 71 and has kept Wall Street guessing on his own retirement, also got personal with this letter. Fink is focused on "Energy pragmatism"The biggest opportunity in infrastructure, according to Fink, is around energy.

He said access to investing can help solve this conundrum, while also pondering if the expectation for everyone to receive Social Security benefits at age 65 has become archaic. Worsening the outlook is a Social Security system that's said it will not be able to pay full benefits by 2034. The 71-year-old believes the American retirement system has entered such a deep crisis that it has become a once-in-a-generation issue. That's because this both can benefit individuals and help ensure the long-term health of Social Security. Increasing lifespans create further difficulties when trying to improve the retirement system, Fink said.

When you think about lace, “modern” probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. The centuries-old fabric, made by looping, twisting or knitting thread into various open-weave patterns, is more likely to evoke images of quaint cottage curtains or your grandmother’s bridal veil. One features a fish design and another was inspired by patterns popular in the Ottoman courts of the 16th century. In their own homes, Köprülü and Muessel often use the mats atop silver breakfast trays or place them in the center of a dining table as decorative elements. “But you could frame them and put them on the wall,” says Köprülü.

By Burcu Karakas and Ceyda CaglayanANTAKYA, Turkey (Reuters) - The Antioch Greek Orthodox Church brought Christians together in Turkey's Antakya for centuries until last year, when an earthquake killed dozens of them and sent hundreds more fleeing. Though it now lies in ruins, many pray it will again bring them back. The deadliest disaster in modern Turkey's history, the quake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in Syria, and left millions homeless. 'PLEASE COME BACK'Some 370 Greek Orthodox families were living in Antakya before the 2023 quake but only 20 remain today, he told Reuters. David Cagan, 53, another member of the local Greek Orthodox community, said it was essential to rebuild the churches.

CNN —King Charles has worn a tie emblazoned with the Greek flag, just days after the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak canceled a meeting with his Greek counterpart in a diplomatic dispute over the Parthenon Sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles. The King wore the tie while meeting world leaders – including Sunak – at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai on Friday. A Buckingham Palace source told CNN the tie was simply one from the King’s current collection and has made other recent appearances. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due to meet Sunak in London on Tuesday. However the meeting was abruptly canceled by Downing Street after Mitsotakis made comments during a television interview about the status of the Parthenon Sculptures, which are currently housed in the British Museum in London.

The image of the flag, which is half white and half blue with the Star of David in its centre, is spreading on Facebook (archived) with claims that it shows the official 1939 Palestinian flag. “The 1939 flag of Palestine shows that it was recognized as a Jewish entity even then,” one Facebook account wrote (archived). According to academics who spoke to Reuters, the flag seen in circulating images is not an official flag of historical Palestine. An example of a mandate-era official flag from 1946 can be seen on the British Imperial War Museums website. The official flag of mandate Palestine in 1939, during which Palestine was administered by Britain as a League of Nations Mandate, was a Union Jack.

Greece has repeatedly asked for their permanent return to Athens, while Britain and the museum have refused to do so. They were transported to Britain and bought by the British Museum in 1816, and are exhibited as a prized part of its collection in London. The sculptures at the British Museum make up about half of a 160-metre frieze which adorned the Parthenon temple on the rocky Acropolis hill in Athens. The trustees have said they would consider a loan to Greece if Greece acknowledges the British Museum's ownership of the sculptures, which Greek governments have refused in the past. The British Museum in January 2023 called for a new Parthenon Partnership with Greece and said discussions were ongoing.

Reuters —Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis accused his British counterpart, Rishi Sunak, of canceling a scheduled meeting in London on Tuesday in a diplomatic spat over the status of the Parthenon Sculptures. “I express my annoyance that the British Prime Minister cancelled our planned meeting just hours before it was due to take place,” Mitsotakis said in a statement. “Greece’s positions on the issue of the Parthenon Sculptures are well known. Deputy British Prime Minister Oliver Dowden was available to meet Mitsotakis to discuss these issues instead, Sunak’s office said. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled a planned wide-ranging meeting with his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the latter raised the decades-old demand for the return of the Parthenon sculptures from the British Museum. "It shows a lack of respect to the prime minister but also to the country he represents." Now even the British Museum goes by the preferred Greek form — Parthenon Sculptures. For many, Parthenon Sculptures are its most striking example. They were shipped to Britain and eventually joined the British Museum's collection in 1816 — five years before the uprising that created an independent Greece. The British Museum says the sculptures were acquired legally and form an integral part of its display of the world's cultural history. That would add pressure on the British Museum, while U.K. public opinion is seen as increasingly backing the Greek demand.
